Last weekend, I hosted a group of women on a tour through some of my favorite wineries in the Willamette Valley. These weren\u2019t just friends, they were the exact kind of guests every winery wants to attract.<\/span><\/p>\n In their thirties. Smart. Successful. Curious. They\u2019ve built a weekly tradition they call <\/span>Wine Thursday<\/span><\/i>, where 15 women gather to share bottles, stories, and life with each other. They aren\u2019t sommeliers. They love what it makes possible- connection, conversation, joy.<\/span><\/p>\n I was excited to show them the beauty and depth of our region. We kicked off the day with breakfast and bubbles at Red Hills Market, and it felt like we were off to a perfect start.<\/span><\/p>\n But as we made our way from tasting to tasting, something shifted.<\/span><\/p>\n The laughter in the car rides didn\u2019t follow us into the rooms.<\/span> No one asked us what we liked.<\/span> It was as if someone pressed play on a pre-programmed hospitality experience and we were expected to sit still and receive it.<\/span><\/p>\n I visit 50+ tasting rooms a year, and I love them.<\/span> Watching <\/span>outsiders<\/span><\/i>, the average guest, go through tasting after tasting with glazed-over eyes? It was <\/span>brutal<\/span><\/i>.<\/span> And this group? They\u2019re <\/span>fun<\/span><\/i>.<\/span> It made me stop and ask:<\/span> When we worked with our first winery ten years ago, things felt different.<\/span> If you\u2019ve ever sat with Denise and Scott Flora, or Doug and Dionne Irvine, you know what I mean. You\u2019ve laughed. You\u2019ve bantered. You\u2019ve heard, not just about the wine, but the lives, the risks, and the love behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n That\u2019s hospitality.<\/b> So now I ask:<\/span> As tasting rooms multiply and great hospitality staff becomes harder to find, the danger is this: we replace connection with programming. We swap storytelling for scripts. \n<\/span>At each stop, we were seated, handed a script, and gently talked <\/span>at<\/span><\/i> about soil, elevation, clones, canopy management. It was well-meaning, but completely disconnected from who we were.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>No one cracked a joke.<\/span>
\n<\/span>No one read the room.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>But I\u2019m an insider. I\u2019m visiting friends. The experience I get is often intimate, joyful, warm.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>I felt like a bad host, powerless to stop the energy from draining out of what should have been a vibrant, unforgettable day.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>In the car: music, laughter, stories.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In the tasting room: silence, stillness, polite nods.<\/span>
\n<\/span>The seriousness and formality just… sucked the joy out of it.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>Has the industry changed?<\/b><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>There were <\/span>characters<\/span><\/i> in the room.<\/span>
\n<\/span>People who took their wine seriously, but not themselves.<\/span>
\n<\/span>People who made you <\/span>feel<\/span><\/i> something.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/b>That\u2019s what people remember.<\/span>
\n<\/span>That\u2019s what brings them back and makes them want to belong.<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>Who\u2019s making sure guests are having fun?<\/b>
\n<\/b>Who\u2019s reading the room? Who\u2019s inviting people in, not just to taste wine, but to <\/span>feel welcomed, delighted, and alive<\/span><\/i>?<\/span><\/p>\n
\n<\/span>It\u2019s about the stories told between pours, not just the notes inside the glass.<\/span>
